Mrs. Martha Harmon Manston

The Manston family announces with profound sadness the death of Mrs. Martha Harmon-Manston, wife of former senior senator J. Hodo Manston of Maryland County, Republic of Liberia. This sad event occurred at 3AM at the Miriam Hospital on Wednesday, September 8, 2004, in Providence, RI, USA. She was 66 years (August 16, 1938 - September 8, 2004).

Education
Mrs. Manston attended the Cape Palmas High School after graduating from the African Methodist School in Harper, Maryland County. Because of an opportunity, she left Cape Palmas High School and enrolled in a nursing training program in the Cavalla Hospital in Firestone, Maryland. Upon completion of the training, she was assigned to the then Tubman National Hospital, which later became the J. J. Dossen Memorial Hospital in Harper City. After six years of productive service in the medical field where she demonstrated compassion, affability and graciousness for her patients and coworkers, she changed profession from nursing to teaching, overwhelmingly due to her love for children.

Her teaching career spanned a period of twenty years in both Maryland and Bong Counties. Some of her former famous students include Dr. Mator Kpangbai, assistant principal of the Gilbert Stuart Middle School in Rhode Island and president of the Liberian Association of Rhode Island; Dr. Anthony Woart, a university professor in Virginia, USA.

In 1976 the government of Liberia transferred her husband, J. Hodo Manston from the Bong County school system to take over the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) where Martha received an appointment as Director of Dietary Services from the governing council of the system. She served in that position from 1976 to 1990 (15 years).

Here in the United States, up to her untimely passing, she worked at the Wrentham Developmental Center in Massachusetts for the past ten years.

Honor

On July 26, 2003, the city of Baltimore, USA conferred upon her an honorary citizenship along with her husband J. Hodo Manston.

Fraternities

Martha was a member of the Cedar Lodge number 131 USA. Until her departure from Liberia she was a member of the Martha Chapter number 10 in Monrovia, Liberia.

Religious Affiliation

She was born a Methodist but died an Episcopalian.

Martha Harmon Manston is survived by her husband, 7 children; Charles, Katherine, Nyeba, Nyeneplu, John Jr., Godfrey, and Gahie; 18 Foster children including, Winston Sr. Winston Jr. Moses, Thomas, Isaac, Lyndon T, Peter W, and others; 7 grandchildren, Audrey, Veronica, Shadrick, Hamilton, Charles Jr., Carmen and Gina; 1 sister, Mrs. Anna Harmon Warner, 4 Great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends.
