George Massa Arku  1944-2017

It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of George Massa Arku, son of Chief John D. Arku and Makra Arku.  George passed away at Catholic Hospital in Monrovia on January 26, 2017 of complications from diabetes.

George was educated at Konola Mission and St. Patrick's High School in Liberia.  He continued his education in the United States where he received a BA from Wartburg College, an MA from Howard University and a JD degree from Drake University School of Law. He then spent his entire professional career, 32 years in all, working for the Bureau of Maritime Affairs as Deputy Commissioner in Geneva, Switzerland and in Virginia, United States and later as the Liberian Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization in London, United Kingdom.

Even though George spent most of his life abroad, he never forgot where he came from. He remained throughout his life a true son of Lofa, maintaining strong ties to his family in Liberia.  In all his professional capacities, George sought tirelessly to safeguard the interests of Liberia and was often at odds with people who operated on the basis of personal gain.  He was ever true to his principles and believed in leading by example. He was courageous in the face of adversity and refused to give up no matter the complexity of his situation.  He was an eternal optimist.

George leaves behind his wife, Kari, their daughters, Kamilla and Sefanie, his sisters and brothers, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and countless friends in Liberia and throughout the world.  He will be sorely missed for his kindness, his strong moral convictions, his humanity, compassion, humility and optimism. Rest in peace, George Arku.
