Dr. Hederick Henry Pogbetha Barlay

Dr. Hederick Henry Pogbetha Barlay was born in the Atlantic coastal town of Party-Shenge, Sherbro Homeland, in Sierra Leone, West Africa on May 12, 1937. He was the oldest of 11 children. He departed to be with the Lord on June 27, 2017 in his adopted hometown - East Point, Georgia (USA).


Dr. Barlay was a veteran international banker and executive coach who rose in ranks from a Head Teller (1962) to Vice President/Chief Operating Officer (1986) with Citibank in 25 years of service. His varied operations-management work experience enabled him to orchestrate the start-up of Ecobank Transnational Inc., (ETI), a bank holding company, in Togo. In 1987, he became its first Executive Director, responsible for introducing new commercial banking subsidiaries across West Africa within a five year time frame. During his career life, he received a combined Bachelor of Science (B.S), and MBA from California Coast University, CA, USA. In 1997, Dr. Barlay proudly earned a Doctorate degree in Banking and Finance, from St. Clements University, England.


Dr. Barlay is predeceased by his parents, William Hubert & Issata (Swaray) Barlay and his son, Kongtham Barlay.  He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Princess; sons, William H. Barlay, Hederick H. P. Barlay, II, Thua G. (Andrea) Barlay, Gregory Bulow; daughters, Sangima (Stan) Lee, Lango Barlay, Kona (Douglas) Bahr; brothers, Francis, Frank, Moses, John; sisters, Elma, Jaicy, Choko; seven grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.


The Wake/Visitation Service will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2017 from 4 - 8pm at the Brown and Young Funeral Home at 7075 Swift Street, Lithonia, GA 30058.  The family will receive friends from 4 - 5pm


The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 11 am at East Point First Mallalieu United Methodist Church at 2651 N. Church Street, East Point, GA 30344.  His internment will be at College Park Cemetery at 3600 Adams Street, College Park, GA 30337.
