The Bates and Ledlum families announce the home-going of our matriarch, our darling sister ,loving  mother, caring aunt, wonderful cousin, adoring grandmother, gentle great-grandmother, sweet great great-grandmother and cherished friend, Mother Evelyna V. Bates. This peaceful transition occurred on Christmas morning at approx. 6:04 at the home of her daughter in Raleigh, NC.

Mother Bates was born and raised in Careysburg City, Liberia. She was predeceased by her husband, Mr. Edward A Bates, Sr. and her son, Mr. Ernest A. Bates, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory 13 children: James K. Bates; Alice Bates-Banks (*Samuel); M. Evelyn Bates-Walker (*Lincoln); Claudia Bates-Togba (*Anthony); Annette Bates-Seton (Nathaniel); Edward Francis Bates, Sr. (Georgia); Jimmy D. Bates, Sr. (Benetta); Eva Bates-Sherman (Thomas); Jefferson S. Bates (Letia); Rev. Edward A. Bates, Jr. (Mercy); Annie Bates-Richards (*Varnie); Rev. Charles F. Bates (Vickie); and Maria Bates-Korgar (Alexander). 5 foster children: David D. Bates (Martha); Victoria Capehart (Othello); Catherine Vincent (Joseph); Mary Cisco (Jerry); Nathaniel Bates (Oneke), 102 grandchildren, 153 great-grand children, 18 great great-grandchildren;  3 sisters: Sarah Knuckles, Cecelia Knuckles-Stevens (Richard) and Irene Knuckles-Broh (*David), 1 sister-in-law, Cecelia Ledlum, several nieces, nephews and friends in the US, Canada, Liberia, Ghana and throughout Europe. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her memory will forever be cherished in our hearts.

May she rest in perpetual peace!
