Annette Elizabeth Woods Brewer

July 6, 1932 – September 20, 2012

The Brewer, Woods and Johnson families announce with deep regret the passing, in her 81st year, of Mrs. Elizabeth Woods Brewer, an educator and daughter of Grand Bassa County, and widow of the late Ambassador Herbert Brewer. This sad event occurred on Thursday, September 20, 2012 in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Mrs. Brewer had a long and illustrious career as an educator in both Liberia and the United States.  She taught at Lott Carey Mission School in Brewerville, Montserrado County, at the Demonstration Elementary School and at the Matilda Newport Jr. High School in Monrovia where she served as Vice Principal. She also taught in the Catholic and Public School systems in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States of America.

Mrs. Brewer was a graduate of the Booker Washington Institute in Kakata, Margibi County. She received her bachelor’s degree in English from Cuttington College in Suakoko, Bong County; and her master’s degree in Education from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1960.

She leaves to mourn her children Herbert Brewer (Erica Rapier), Angelene (Joseph) Ehimika, Chiori (Nyemade) Brewer, and Samuel (Rosemary) Woods; 12 grandchildren; her 5 sisters; 55 nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives, friends and colleagues. Her parents, the Reverend E. Tyson Woods Jr. and Mrs. Maryann Johnson Woods, predeceased her.

Mrs. Brewer was a staunch Liberian patriot who believed in and fought throughout her life for a right to education for all Liberians.

A wake will be held in Monrovia on Friday October 19, 2012. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012, 9:00 AM at the St Joseph Parish, Our Lady of Lebanon Roman Catholic Church in Sinkor, Monrovia followed immediately by her interment at her ancestral home of Edina, Grand Bassa County, Liberia.

May God have mercy on her and may her soul rest in perfect and eternal peace.
A memorial service will be held in the Washington DC area at a time and location to be announced later.
