Marie Augusta Coleman Cassell

Though nothing can bring back the hour,
Of splendor in the grass,
Of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not,
Rather find strength in what remains behind.

Marie Augusta Coleman Cassell, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 12, 2013.  Mrs. Cassell quietly passed away in her sleep.  “Mama was the foundation of our family; we will greatly miss her, and we take comfort in knowing that she has ceased from her suffering,” said a family member.

Mrs. Cassell was the wife of the late James D. Cassell Sr., the daughter of the late Samuel David Coleman and Mai Mitchell Jones, and the granddaughter of former president William D. Coleman.  She was pre-deceased by three of her eight children; James D. Cassell, Jr., Delano A. Cassell, and Nathaniel H.B. Cassell.

Mrs. Cassell leaves behind to mourn her passing her children; Gwendolyn Cassell Collins (M.C. Collins), Mai Cassell Brown, Sophrinia Cassell, John Cassell (Natalie Darby Cassell), and Marie Cassell Washington (Malachi Washington); nineteen grand children; seven great-grand children; her sisters, Reverend Genevieve Garnett, Paulita Padmore, Violet Coleman, Melvina Coleman, Louisa Coleman, and Deborah Cooper; her brothers, Edward Benson, Moses Coleman, LaVee Moulton; her sister-cousin, Johnetta King; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loved ones who knew her  and called her “Mama”.
“A woman of God, Mama left us with a legacy of prayer.  She had a loving and giving spirit.  She gave all she had and can now cease from her struggles and suffering.”  “For the last forty-five years she has been both mother and father to us, and Heaven’s gain is our heart aching loss,” said her daughter.

Mrs. Cassell’s Home going service will take place May 11th, 2013 at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 11 am, 514 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90007, where she was a faithful member for over twenty-five years.

The family will hold a wake and viewing on May 10th at Simpson Funeral Home, 3453 W. Manchester Blvd., Los Angeles, CA.
