Honorable Dr. James Lamark Cox, Sr.

The Cox and Greenfield families are deeply saddened to announce the homegoing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and cousin, the Honorable Dr. James Lamark Cox, Sr., former Senator (1997-2002) and former Superintendent (1977-1980) of Maryland County. He passed away peacefully at home in Monrovia, 85 years of age, on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 1:00 p.m., surrounded by loved ones in prayer.

Hon. Cox was predeceased by his wife, the Reverend Dixine Cox; his daughters, Julie Cox and Yvonne Cox; his sisters, Louisa Cox Cooper, Julia Thompson, Eliza Cox and Rebecca Cox Russ; and his brother, Dashward Cox. He is survived by his children, Ora Horton, Greg Page, Stephanie Horton, Daniel Horton, Karen Freeman Cassell (Joshua), Nyemade Cox Brewer (Chiori), Georgia Cox Thompson (Greg), Brenda Cox Boone (Rod), Stephen Horton (Alisha), James Cox, James Lamark Cox, Jr. (Naketa) and J. Mark Cox; his siblings, Anna Cox Hutchins, William Cox, Comfort Cox Dosie, Maryann Cox Russell, Sara Cox Jeffy and Rachel Cox; 29 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, foster children and lifelong friends.

Devoted family man, exemplary statesman, distinguished public servant, cherished friend, respected colleague and dedicated servant of the church, may his soul rest in perfect peace and light perpetual shine upon him.

Wake Keeping
The wake service will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 9:00 p.m. at the Alzetta Prout Memorial Chapel, Ashmun Street, Snapper Hill, Monrovia.

Funeral Services
The funeral service will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Ashmun Street, Monrovia, followed by the internment and repast.
