Obituary
Sunrise November 22, 1931
Sunset June 1, 2006

Gwendolyn Freeman was born to the late Ms. Agnes Ricks & the late Rev. Jerome E. Freeman Sr. on November 22, 1931.

At an early age, she embraced the Christian religion.

Gwendolyn started her early education at Alexander M. Crumwell Memorial Hall, in Clay-Ashland. Her abilities exceeded what was normally expected. Due to her high academic performances, she was granted a scholarship to the College of West Africa, Monrovia. While in school, she began to show interest in clothing design and dress making, taking after her mother, an educator, Agnes Ricks-Cisco, a renowned seamstress of her time. Upon completion of College of West Africa, she started her professional career as a designer and dressmaker.

Gwendolyn was married to Mr. Lasander Padmore. This union was short. She later married the late Mr. Samuel Cole, which ended in divorce.

Early in Gwendolyn's career, she became well known for her unique clothing designs and dress making abilities. Again, she was granted another scholarship to attend a designing school overseas. After a few months, she was informed that her gift of designing and dressmaking exceeded their level of the program. She returned home and began to display her God-given talent, designing and making clothing; including beaded and stone posted wedding garments and elegant bridal headpieces. Her designs made her known as one of Liberia's most brilliant designers and dressmakers. She designed and made clothing for the first families and elite women of Liberia for over forty years, putting her in the rank with top designers in France and the U.S.A.

She was a loving woman. This personality was demonstrated through her daily caring and teaching of her children, siblings, family members and friends. She shared her talent by teaching many how to design, sew and do arts and craft. She shared her home with many family members and friends during their time of need. She took care of her elderly family members like she was the only one they had. Through out her life, even during the civil crisis in Liberia, she shared food with those in need. For many years she lived happily surrounded by her children, siblings, relatives, and friends.

She was predeceased by her 4 brothers, Junior Cisco, Kai, Jerome, and Butler, and her daughter, "Small Gwen".

She leaves to mourn her lost, her children:
Cathleen, Victoria, Jacqueline, Michael, Bono, Thomas, Bendu, Peter,
Joseph, Betty and Esther.
Her Siblings: J. Valerie, Almira V, D. Web (Annette), and R. Joann (Larry).
Other Siblings Include: Robert D. (Eliza), Walter O., Anthony B., Thelma E., and
Lucia Y.
Nephews: Washington Cisco and David Freeman.
Nieces: Victoria, Brenda, Angel, Rose, and Annette
AND A LARGE NUMBER OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

On June 1, 2006, a hollow hole was drilled in our hearts when our mother, sister, aunt cousin, and friend was called home to rest. We pray for healing and Jesus answer our prayers. No more hunger, no more crying, no more sickness. Thank you Jesus for answering our prayers. May our beloved Gwen rest in perfect peace until the great family reunion, when our hearts will be whole again.

Rest in Peace Sister Gwendolyn
