Lydia Viola Gbenyon
Sunrise: June 16th, 1928   ¨   Sunset: March 1st, 2015

Lydia Viola Gbenyon, affectionately known as “Mama” or “L.V.” went home to the Lord on Sunday, March 1st, 2015, surrounded by family and close friends at the Carolinas Medical Center - University in Charlotte, NC.

Prior to becoming ill, the last few years of her life, L.V. lived a life that most people can only dream of, she was married to the late Rev. Mr. Lawrence E. Gbenyon, Sr. (deceased) for 45 years. The two of them traveled the world together, during his tenure as a diplomat, living in Italy, Ghana and Liberia. While in Liberia, she was the founder and proprietor of L.V.’s Restaurant, which was originally located on Ashmun Street at the E.J. Roye Building and later relocated to Sayon Town, where she lived. L.V.’s Restaurant was regarded as one of the best restaurants in the country. Gifted and passionate about cooking, L.V. enjoyed being able to share her dishes with others. After relocating to the United States permanently in 1990, she continued cooking for family and friends for special occasions and for Sunday dinner.

L.V. was the proud mother of Patricia Abraham, Rachel Diggs (Joe), Etweda Cooper, William Ward, II. (Facia) Glacia Ward-Patray (Nathaniel),  Magdalene McClain (Randolph),  Lawrence Gbenyon, Jr. (Elizabeth), Arnoldo Gbenyon (Sonya) and Giorgio Gbenyon ( Marwin).  Deceased children include, Charles Gbenyon (Glacia) and Enid Gbenyon.
