Mr. Joseph Gonkarnu Gono, Sr.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (Psalm 73:26)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved and spirited father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, Mr. Joseph Gonkarnu Gono, Sr. on June 12, 2017 in Silver Spring, MD after a protracted illness. He was born on September 23, 1938 in Gbounlay, Nimba County, Liberia. At an early age, he traveled to Monrovia to attend primary and secondary schools. He matriculated from the College of West Africa and traveled overseas to pursue studies in security science and intelligence. He completed trainings at Scotland Yard, United Kingdom; La Sûreté Nationale (today known as La Police Nationale) Paris, France; and the Washington Police Academy, Washington, DC.

He faithfully served his country in various capacities, including as Deputy Director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI now NSA), as the first director of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and as Director of Security at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center. In his later life he was an entrepreneur, launching his own security firm, Private Eye Detective Service.

He traveled to the U.S. in 1988 and lived first in Philadelphia, PA and later in Silver Spring, MD where he resided until his death. He is survived by one brother, John Morris Gono of Saniquellie, Nimba County; his children: Caroline, Rowena, Marcia, Joseph Jr., Sinski, Ebrom, Joe-Alvin, Famatta, Julius, Lynda, and Christopher; 15 grandchildren; 1 great-grand child; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Our father was outgoing, a soccer enthusiast and an avid fan of the Barolle Soccer Club. He will be greatly missed! Thank you for your calls and prayers.

A Memorial Service celebrating his life will take place on:
