Mr. George Alexander Grimes, Sr.
December 8, 1930 – March 7, 2017
The Grimes, Toles, Allison, Seton, Bowman, and Porte families are saddened to announce the death in his 87th year of our loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin Mr. George Alexander Grimes, Sr. This sudden home going occurred on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at North Memorial Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Mr. George A. Grimes was a renowned civil engineer. After completion of graduate studies in the United States, he began his professional life with employments in Vermont, Washington, Puerto Rico, and Europe. He returned to Liberia and embarked on a career with the Ministry of Public Works spanning over 50 years. Among other capacities, he served the Government of Liberia, with distinction, as Resident Engineer in Maryland and Sinoe counties. He continued active employment with Public Works in Montserrado County until the outbreak of the Liberian civil war which forced him into exile in America. Mr. Grimes was an avid famer and successful businessman. Together with his wife, Etmonia, they owned and managed agricultural, poultry, and horticultural farms in Johnsonville, Liberia.
He leaves to mourn his loss and cherish his memory, his wife of 56 years, Mrs. Etmonia Toles Grimes; children: Jessie Powells, Benjamin Toles (Janelle), Georgia Grimes, George Grimes Jr. (Gwen), Stanley Grimes (Tiffany), Julius Grimes (Tisa), Harrison Grimes, Edward Grimes, Patricia Grimes, Amelia Grimes, Linda Grimes Birma (Ansu); 41 grandchildren; great grandchildren; brothers: Mr. Franco Grimes, Dr. Samuel Bowman, Mr. Alexander Grimes; sisters-in-law: Mrs. Adelaide C. Toles Greene, Mrs. Elizabeth Hart, Mrs. Gertrude Toles Walker, Mrs. Barbara Toles, Mrs. Muriel De’Toles, Rev. Janetta D. Grimes; brother-in-law: Mr. Richard C. Toles Sr.; nieces; nephews; cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends in Liberia, United States, and worldwide.
George Alexander was predeceased by his father Mr. Charlie B. Grimes; mother Mrs. Julia Allison; his only sister Ms. Christiana Grimes; foster daughter Mrs. Tetee Howe Chea; brother Mr. Henry D. Grimes; brothers-in-law Dr. J. Lafayette Toles, Mr. James Toles, Mr. Roosevelt Toles, Mr. James De’Toles.
Dad, you will be dearly missed. Your wonderful memories will remain in our hearts. Rest in Eternal Peace.
