M. Burleigh Holder (“MBH”)
August 3, 1929 – August 26, 2018

The Holder, Urey, and Tolbert families announce with blessed assurance that MBH went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on August 26, 2018. He passed away peacefully in his home in Minnesota, USA. He was 89 years old.

M. Burleigh Holder, BA (Liberia) and LLB (London), of very humble beginnings in Crozerville, served in the Liberian government, including as assistant secretary of state, for a period of more than two decades and he represented his country at the United Nations on the UN Law of the Sea conference and the International Labour Organisation [sic]. He rose to become the holder of two cabinet posts in the government of Liberia, which was calamitously overthrown on April 12, 1980. Mr. Holder also taught briefly at the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Liberia, University of Liberia.

In Minnesota, he co-founded a nonprofit, African and American Friendship Association for Cooperation and Development, currently known as New Americans Alliance for Development, with the mission to provide services to empower immigrants and refugees to be fully integrated into Minnesota’s growth and development. In 2006, MBH authored his autobiography, “The Hand of God.”

Besides his dedication to his family, loyalty as a husband, brilliance in his studies, obedience at his government posts and especially the certainty of his word, he will be remembered for his uprightness and placing the wisdom from God as his guide throughout his life.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 45 years, Wilhelmina Valeria Tolbert Holder; his children: Beryl (Michael) Perry, Burleigh D. Holder, Marie Holder, Yende (Jamel) Anderson, Mark (Maryia) Holder, Tanaegh (Christian) Haddad; 14 grandchildren; his brothers: Emmett Holder and Franklin (Pearl) Holder as well as a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 10:00 am at:
