Dr. Alexander Emmanuel Nyema Jones

The Jones, Johnson, Thomas, Shannon, Baker, Bowen and Benson families announce with eternal faith in the hope of the resurrection, the death of their patriarch, Dr. Alexander Emmanuel Nyema Jones, in his 85th year, on Friday, June 16, 2017, in Monrovia, Liberia.

Dr. Jones was one of Liberia’s earliest and preeminent mineral scientists, and the first Minister of Lands, Mines and Energy following its creation by the National Legislature of Liberia. Dr. Jones was previously the Chief Geologist and Director of the Liberian National Geological Survey and Deputy Minister. Later in his career, Dr. Jones was appointed CEO of the National Iron Company (NIOC) of Liberia, where he worked until his relocation from Liberia in 1990. Until retirement in 2013, Dr. Jones was Visiting Professor in the Department of Geology at Northwestern University and Visiting Professor of Biology at Chicago State University.
A devoted servant of the church in his parish, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Monrovia, Liberia, he was a Vestryman, Junior and Senior Warden. He also served for many years as organist of St. Thomas Parish, and with his wife, Dr. Hannah Abeodu Bowen Jones, who was Director of Parish Music, brought solemn music to the parishioners for many years. In the Episcopal Church of Liberia, Dr. Jones was Organist of the Diocese of Liberia.

Dr. Jones was a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons (A.F & A.M.); Past Master, Blazing Star Lodge #17, Scheffelin, Liberia.
His parents, Comfort Nwané Priscilla Johnson and Wodé Gyedaté Gray Johnson, his grandmother, Eliza B. N. Jones, his uncles, J. A. H. Jones, Christian Thomas, and Eugene H.  Shannon, and his uncle and aunt, Ernest C. B. Jones and Georgia Jones, all of whom played significant roles in his upbringing, predeceased him.

Dr. Jones leaves to celebrate and give thanksgiving for his life, his beloved wife of 56 years, Dr. Hannah Abeodu Bowen Jones; his siblings, Lucille Nyeba Wolo, Beatrix Nmano Helb (E. Victor), Dr. George Nyu Johnson (Marietta), Oretha Johnson Tidoe, Clarisa Weade Sherman (Fonie D. F.), Violet N. Johnson, Magdalene Johnson Hansen (Dr. Aloysius P.), Martin Nyema Johnson, and Valerie Comfort P. Johnson; his children: Ciata Jones Raynes (Fred), Bindu Jones-Sherman and Nwané Jones; his grandchildren: Violet Raynes, Fred Raynes, Jr., Alexandria Raynes, and Noah Otabor. He is also survived by his siblings from the home of his Uncle Ernest and Aunty Georgia: Georgia Appleton, Edna Dee-Dee Martisen, Esthel Martisen Carter, Carlos Ajavon, Christian Jones, Ernest C. B. Jones, Jr., Dr. Eugene Shannon, Massa Kanneh, G. Alvin Jones, Paul Jones; his nephew Roy Jenkins; and his many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives in the Jones, Johnson, Thomas, Shannon, Baker, Bowen and Benson families; and his many friends and colleagues in Chicago, Illinois, other parts of the United States, Liberia and Africa, Europe, and from around the world.

May his soul rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon him.

The remains of Dr. Alexander Emmanuel Nyema Jones will be removed from Samuel A. Stryker Funeral Service at 3:00pm on Friday, July 14, 2017, under escort of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons (A.F & A.M.) to the Grand Lodge, Benson Street, Monrovia, Liberia.

A Vigil and Wake Keeping service will be held on Friday, July 14, 2017, 6:00pm - 9:00pm, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Camp Johnson Road, Monrovia, Liberia. (All tributes must be paid at the wake.)

Saturday, July 15, 2017
On Saturday, July 15, 2017, a Requiem Mass for the peaceful repose of the soul of Dr. Alexander Emmanuel Nyema Jones, will be said 8:00am - 10:30am at Trinity Cathedral, Broad Street, Monrovia, Liberia.
Final Rites for Dr. Jones will be said at St. John’s Irving Memorial Church following arrival of the funeral cortege in Robertsport, Cape Mount.

Dr. Alexander Emmanuel Nyema Jones will be laid to rest in the family plot in the cemetery of  St. John’s Irving Memorial Church, Robertsport, Cape Mount, on Saturday, July 15, 2017.
