Mrs. Eve Selina Armstrong Lewis
May 26, 1925 – March 21, 2017

The Lewis, Armstrong, Hoff, Martin, and Chenoweth families are saddened to announce the death in her 92nd year of our loving sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and cousin, Mrs. Eve Selina Armstrong Lewis. This sudden home going occurred on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at Clove Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center on Staten Island, New York.

Eve was born in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County, Liberia to the union of Stephen Armstrong Snr. and Athelia Hoff-Armstrong on May 26, 1925. She attended Bromley School for Girls in Virginia, Liberia as well as nursing school in Robertsport, Cape Mount County Liberia.

Eve was a career diplomatic wife. After marriage to Reverend Levi Hamilton Martin, the Senior Senator of Grand Bassa County in 1948, she began a life of service in cultural and culinary diplomacy, representing Liberia at various international events as well as at home.

She was a member of the official Liberian delegation to the 1953 coronation of HM, Elizabeth II of England, the 1955 Silver Jubilee of HIM, Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, as well as numerous plenary sessions at the United Nations in New York.

She also accompanied her husband in 1958, in his capacity as a guest preacher, to the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, NY.

The two owned and managed agricultural, animal husbandry, and horticultural farms in Grand Bassa County, Liberia until their divorce in 1960.

On August 26th 1964, Eve married her childhood sweetheart, Honorable Charles Benedict Lewis Snr., a member of the Liberian Foreign Service. Together they represented Liberia on three continents until their retirement in 1987.  

Eve was fluent in six languages: Vai, Bassa, Haitian Creole, Sierra Leonean Krio, French and German. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a registered nurse, an avid crocheter and an amateur general contractor, overseeing the building of her family’s home on Benson Street as well as a movie theater in Buchanan.

She also taught etiquette skills to numerous girls and young women, teaching them positive socializations skills and moral standards with a strong emphasis on consideration for others.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Judge Martha Massoud, Rebecca Fleming {Raleigh}, Esther Levian Martin-Benjamin, Hamilton Lewis, and Shirlene Joy Fametta Lewis; Her step children Joyce Tonia Lewis-Burrowes, Maria Martin, Dr. Charles Benedict Lewis Jr., Rhodesia Martin-Smith, Reverend Charles Levi Martin (Jurodoe), Ida Martin-Finnegan, Euphemia Martin, Joe Martin, and Christopher Martin. 15 grandchildren; great grandchildren; brother: Mr. Augustus Van Chenoweth; sisters-in-law: Mrs. Ruth Armstrong, Mrs. Sally Armstrong; nieces; nephews; cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends in Liberia, the United States, and worldwide. 

Eve was predeceased by her father Mr. Stephen Armstrong Snr.; mother Mrs. Athelia Hoff-Armstrong; her husband Honorable Charles Benedict Lewis; her siblings Samuel Hoff, Dr. Charles Wesley Armstrong (Ruth B.), Stephen Armstrong Jnr, Richard Armstrong (Sally), Thomas Armstrong, Hannah Armstrong-Chenoweth; As well as nine infant children.

Mummy, you lived an extraordinary life, you will be dearly missed. We will cherish each and every moment we had with you. We will continue to live by your words to “dance as though no one is watching, love as if we’ve never been hurt before, sing as though no one can hear us and live as though Heaven is on Earth.”
Rest in Eternal Peace.
