IN MEMORIAM Cora Augusta Grimes

The Grimes, Cassell, Nyambuya, Flemister and Hampton families announce a Memorial Mass to celebrate and honor the life of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt, Cora Augusta Grimes (affectionately known as “Mimi)” at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at St. Philip Episcopal Church, 166 Woodland Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43203.

Cora Augusta Grimes was born on June 26, 1926, in Monrovia, Liberia. She received her elementary education at the Trinity Parish (Episcopal) School (TPS), now B. W. Harris Episcopal School in Monrovia, Liberia. She later attended the College of West Africa (CWA) where she graduated high school.  She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, New York, NY and a master’s degree in education from University of California, Berkley.

She was married to the late Arthur B. Cassell, Sr., with whom she had four children.  They were later divorced.

Cora was a lifelong Episcopalian and held leadership roles in the Episcopal Churches in both Liberia and the United States.
Cora was a passionate educator and mentor.  Her career spanned over 50 years of teaching in Liberia and the United States, including serving as principal of several public and private schools in Liberia.  She also worked in the Curriculum Development Department at the Ministry of Education.  The Liberian civil war ended many years of service to her country, forcing her to return to the United States where she spent the last two decades of her life.

On Monday, March 18, 2013, our beloved Mimi, Cora A. Grimes, passed away at Mt. Carmel East Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, following a protracted illness.

She leaves to mourn her loss her children, Clara Cassell-Nyambuya, Ernestein Cassell-Flemister and Frankie N. Cassell; (her oldest son, Arthur B. Cassell, Jr. pre-deceased her); grandchildren, Tsitsi N. Hampton (Jonathan), Chipo C. Nyambuya, Marcus A. Flemister, Lauren S. Flemister, Fulkra N. Cassell, Arthur B. Cassell, III, Clara Naomi Cassell and Franklynn Nathalia Cassell; great grandchildren, Taruwaye J. Hampton, Tinashe C. Hampton and Nathan A.S. Cassell; sister-in-law, Edith M. Grimes, many nieces and nephews, good and loyal friends in Liberia, the United States and from many areas across the world, god children and members of her church families at Trinity Cathedral, Monrovia, Liberia; St. Stephen, Sinkor, Liberia and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Columbus, Ohio.

We love you and miss you.  Rest in peace until we meet again.
