Monrovia
is the capital of the Republic of Liberia, which
is located on the southern Atlantic in West Africa.
Monrovia was originally called Christopolis, but was later
renamed after US President James Monroe.
Monrovia is
a port city on the Atlantic Ocean located at the mouth of
the Mesurado River. It had a population of about 500,000
before the war (1990), but swelled to over a million as a
result of the massive internal displacement caused by the
war.
