Sylvanus Corker

Sylvanus Corker, age 64, faithful husband, loving father and grandfather passed away December 25th 2012, with his family by his side in Arlington, Virginia. He was born April 17th, 1948, in the town of Vezala in Lofa County, Liberia to Mr. Amala Kamara and Ms. Telegia Marwen. Sylvanus’s father passed away when he was six years old. Shortly thereafter, his uncle Mr. Henry K. Marvie took over his raising and upbringing.

He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1965.  Afterwards, he attended the University of Oregon and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism in 1970.  He also served as president of the Saint Joseph Warriors Football Team in Liberia.  Thereafter he earned a master’s degree in Communications from the American University in 1987.

While working at ELBC-Liberia Broadcasting System and teaching English & Literature at Tubman High School, he met his wife Marley Johnson while covering the Miss Liberia Pageant. They spent the next 40 years together and their union was blessed with four beautiful children. 

In his professional life, Sylvanus served the Government and people of Liberia for many years, and held several positions, including instructor with the Monrovia Consolidated School System, Director of News at the Liberia Broadcasting System, Assistant Minister for Information Services at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism, and Press Counselor at the Liberian Embassy in Washington, D.C., United States of America.

Sylvanus is pre-deceased by his father Mr. Amala Kamara, his mother Ms.Telegia Marwen, and his sister Tuagbe. He is survived by his loving wife Marley Corker, his four children, Richard, Musu, Ciania, and Leila; daughter-in-law Lisa; grandchildren Edmund and Elaine; sisters Musu, Torlah, and Mabel; and brothers Korvah and Joseph. He also leaves to mourn nieces, nephews, dear friends and a host of other relatives.

Viewing and Visitation: Thursday, January 3, 2013; 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
