Lorenzo Abdul Harris, Sr – aka: ‘Big Brother’

It is with the deepest sorry that the Harris’ family announce the passing of Lorenzo Abdul Harris Sr. This sad incident occurred on Saturday, September 7, 2019 near the Henderson Airfield, Las Vegas, Nevada, United State of America as a result of plane crash.

‘Dad’, ‘Big brother’, ‘Uncle Lorenzo’, ‘Strong’, ‘Boolu’, ‘Boss’ Lorenzo’s passing was and still is a huge shock to all his family and friends, especially at such young age of 48.

He was born on April 1, 1971 in Monrovia, Liberia to the union of Mr. Richelieu B. Harris Sr. and Mrs. Malia E. Harris. In Liberia Lorenzo attended: Hayes Mission School, Bomi County; Killingsworth Mission School, Montserrado County; and St. Patrick’s High School, Monrovia. In 1988 Lorenzo was awarded the Liberia & United States Student Exchange Program scholarship that provided him the opportunity to attend the Chillicothe High School in Ohio. During his school year in the US, he was hosted by Mr. John and Mrs. Emma Vanmeter family. Following his return home he graduated from the Barnes Foundation High School in Monrovia and matriculated to the University of Liberia. In a pursue to accomplish his childhood dreamed profession of becoming an airplane pilot, Lorenzo earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautics from the Embryriddle Aeronautical University, United States and completed aviation training at the California Flight Academy, San Diego California.

As a person with deep love for humanity and a strong sense of passion to help people in need of assistance, Lorenzo during the early period of the Liberian Civil War volunteered at the Liberian Red Cross where he distributed food, medical supplies and clothes to war stricken victims. Lorenzo who was also a survivor of that brutal and devastating civil war won the United States Diversity Immigrant Visa and immigrated to the US where he enlisted in the Navy. For his outstanding professional and distinguished services in the Navy, he was awarded the honors of: 5 Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals; 6 Good Conduct Medals; a National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Iraq Campaign Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Armed Forces Medal; Rifleman Marksman Ribbon; Pistol Shot Sharpshooter Ribbon; Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist Medal; and Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare Specialist medal. During his 20-year stay in the Navy, Lorenzo served on multiple tours of duty in many parts of the world including Iraq where he had five tours of duty.

Following his honorably retirement from the US Navy, Lorenzo worked as a flight instructor at the California Flight Academy, San Diego California. At the flight academy he trained a number of pilots who highly rated and lauded his professionalism.

Lorenzo was a Deacon of the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Liberia. He was married to Shiawana Turner for 10 years. Lorenzo leaves to mourn his loss: four wonderful children - three sons, Keivon, Lorenzo Jr. (aka: LL), and David, one daughter Lorene; his elderly parents, Richelieu Sr. and Malia Harris; 5 siblings, Reuben, Eliza, Elizabeth (aka Zoe) Richelieu, Jr. and Malia; several uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins; the Harris, Hoff, Johnson, Deensie, Smith, Greene, Browne, McDonald, Addo, Tucker and Sidibe families; a host of relatives and friends in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire.

Funeral Service: Thursday, September 26 2019, 10:00 a.m. at the Chula Vista Presbyterian Church, 940 Hilltop Drive, Chula Vista, CA 91911

Post-funeral reception (repass): At Chula Presbyterian Church (immediately following interment)

Interment: Miramar National Cemetery at 1:30pm, 5795 Nobel Dr, San Diego, CA 92122

Celebration of Life: Saturday, September 29, 2019 at Lorenzo’s home (3715 Cherry Blossom
