Deacon Charles Alexander Johnson, Jr.
The Johnson, Holt, and Deline Families announce with profound regret the home going of their husband, father, son, brother, and cousin, Deacon Charles Alexander Johnson, Jr. (affectionately known as Chucky and Deacon Ambassador Charles Johnson, Jr.). He was only 36 years old. This untimely heartbreaking event occurred on Saturday, January 12, at the ELWA hospital in Monrovia, Liberia. Chucky was a PH.D. Candidate working on completing his dissertation and had recently received a promotion as Program Director at his place of employment in New York. He had gone to Liberia to attend and participate in his brother’s and one of his best friends’ weddings to return to the U.S. on January 20th and begin his new senior-level assignment when he met his untimely death in Liberia. Chucky was a graduate of Monrovia College in Monrovia, Liberia. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from the African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU) in Monrovia; he obtained his master’s degree from Capella University in the U.S. where he was working on completing his Dissertation for his Ph.D. when he met his untimely death.
Charles A. Johnson, Jr. was born in Lower Buchanan, Liberia, August 3rd, 1982, unto the union of Hon. Charles J. Johnson and Roselyn Holt-Johnson. He would go on to do great things in a life that was cut short at the tender age of 36 on January 12, 2019. Charles A. Johnson Jr. was a devoted servant of God, a devoted husband, father, family man, and a friend to all. He was also a servant to the people of Liberia and the United States - two countries that he loved so dearly. He was the Chairman of the Deacon Board of the United Christian Assembly Church in New York. Charles was a 32-degree Mason and a member of St. John’s Local Lodge #744 where he served as Junior Warden. He was also a member and State Officer of the Grand Lodge, King Hiram, in the state of New Jersey. He was the President of AME University Alumni Association in the Americas. Chucky was one of the national leaders of the U.S. Branch of the Liberian based Liberty party, and a leader of many other philanthropic and social organizations.
Brief family Background:
The late Deacon Ambassador Charles A. Johnson Jr. as he was also affectionately called, is a direct descendant of Elijah Johnson. Elijah Johnson was born in New York in 1791; he was a member of the U.S. Navy who fought in the War of 1812 against the British. Later, he joined the American Colonization Society and became part of a team of 86 immigrants who sailed to from the U.S. to West Africa in 1820 and established the nation of Liberia. Elijah’s second eldest child, Charles R.H. Johnson later settled in Edina City. Chucky’s father, Charles J. Johnson who predeceased him, and his great grand Father Charles R.H. Johnson, both, served as members of the House of Representatives for Grand Bassa County in Liberia. Like his ancestors, Chucky also had political ambitions in Liberia; however, his life was cut short. On the maternal front, Chucky is the grandson of the late Rev. Dr. G. Franklin Holt, a former President of Monrovia College in Liberia.
Charles leaves to mourn his loss, his loving wife Emerlyn Deline Johnson; two handsome boys, Charles Aubrey Ofa Alexander Johnson (2 years old), and Chad Caden Chaingar Emerson Johnson (eight months old). Their oldest child, Charles A. Johnson III predeceased him 2015. He also leaves to mourn his mother Roselyn Georgianna Holt Johnson; His father Hon. Charles J. Johnson, grandfathers, grandmothers, and one sibling predeceased him. His surviving siblings include: Alma Teta Johnson Thompson (T-Toe Thompson), Vinton Jefferson Johnson (Diana Fomba Johnson), Don Alvin Garnaweh Johnson (Sweetee Harris), and Jefferson E. Johnson. Chucky’s sister Monconjay predeceased him. He also leaves to mourn his aunts and uncles including Janie Johnson Butler, William Alexander Johnson, Jr. (Theonie), Calvin Roosevelt Johnson, Claudia Merie Johnson Wennah (Justin), G. Franklin Holt, Jr., Christopher Holt, and Winston Holt. Chucky is predeceased by uncles Hilary R.W. Johnson, Robert H. Johnson I, Joseph E. Johnson, James W. Johnson, and aunt Emma M.L. Johnson Dudley Davis, Bass. Additionally, Chucky leaves to mourn his loss his parents in law, Bishop Emerson Deline and Mother Angeline Deline who love and cherish him as their own; his sisters in law Zoe Deline, Chelsea Deline, brother in law Emerson Deline, uncle in law Lawrence Kennedy, and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends, including most senior cousins such as retired Ambassador Martinus L. Johnson, Sr., Mother Cynthia Garber, mother Mary B.L. Johnson, and mother Willette Johnson.
The family asks that extended friends of Charles wear Navy Blue and Orange, as he was a vibrant young man. Family members are asked to wear Light Grey and Orange.
On Saturday, January 26, the body will be taken from the Stryker Funeral Home in Monrovia and boarded on a flight for the U.S. to depart on Sunday. The body will arrive at JFK International Airport in New York at 6:20 P.M. EST EST on Monday Jan. 28. It will be escorted to the designated funeral home in Jersey City, NJ.
Note: With the exception of the immediate family and the Church, All Tributes will be paid at the wake.
